The Handshake — Excerpts from “Roberts Rules!”

Your first personal contact during an introduction is the handshake.  Make it count by making it a two-step process.  1) Shake the hand; 2) Look the person in the eye. I’ll never understand people who shake my hand while looking someplace else.

Eye contact is such a simple thing, but it’s so important.  These people spend loads of time and money going to workshops, and seminars, and conferences, to learn how to do well in business, and then they let their eyes roam during a handshake and blow the whole thing.  Always put the two steps together if you want to make a sincere and lasting impression.

Getting Excited about an Idea – Excerpts from “Roberts Rules!”

Too many would-be business people assume that selling is just knowing about the product or service and going out and telling others.  Or they believe that building a better mousetrap generates that the world will beat a path to their door.  They’re wrong.

You have to look beyond the mundane facts of your product or service and find something that people can get excited about, something they are willing to take a risk for.  Everyone has the power and talent to promote and sell something that is unique.  The tough part is getting in touch with that unique selling point.

Getting Ahead – Excerpts from “Roberts Rules!”

Once you decide to go for it, you’ve got to stay focused.  You’ve got to eat, breathe, and sleep whatever it is you’re doing.  Sometimes no matter how hard you work, it’s dumb luck that really makes the difference.

When people tell you you’re crazy, it’s a good sign that you’re on the right track.  When your competitors tell you you’re no good and you’re a failure, that means you’re on to something big.

Getting ahead

If you decide to go for it, at some point there will be risk involved. Eventually, you’ll find yourself flying without a net.  But that’s what makes it so exciting and worthwhile.  If you want to be an entrepreneur in any profession, you have to be able to live with risk, because you can’t get ahead of everybody else without sticking your neck out.

Marc Roberts – Miami, Boxing Promoter

The 90’s found Marc Roberts as one of the superstars of high impact networking. He was barely into his 30’s, but became a street-smart boxing promoter, whose career began and flourished because of his ability to meet and build relationships with people.

Mr. Roberts spent a small fortune building one of the best boxing gyms in the world for his “Triple Threat” three boxers with world championship tracks. They were Olympic gold medalist “Merciless” Ray Mercer, along with Olympic boxers Charles “The Natural” Murray and Alfred “Ice” Cole.

The Plainfield Courier-News described Marc Roberts in an article by sportswriter Carl Barbati: “Sometimes it seems that everybody connected with boxing is there strictly and solely for the money. Then, along comes a guy like Roberts.” Barbati continued, “He got involved with boxing as a college kid, because he loved it, and because he could see a few bucks in it. Several millions later, those are still his priorities, which makes him a distinct rarity.”

SOURCE:  Haute Living
COMPANY: Marc Roberts Companies
INDUSTRY: Real Estate

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: Roberts’ sports management company. Worldwide Entertainment and Sports, was the first of its kind to go public through an IPO, which afforded him the means to become a real estate magnate.

He has been working on the 30-acre Miami Worldcenter project, which aims to transform a blighted area downtown into a live-work-play environment with retail, restaurant, entertainment, hotel, residential, and commercial components.

It’s an ambitious project (to say the least) that entails creating 12 million square feet over the next 20 years. Roberts ran into roadblocks as the bottom fell out of the real estate market, but he is nothing if not tenacious, so we don’t expect this project to go by the wayside like so many others that never left the drawing board.
